We discuss how he got his start, his time working at NARS, what goes into creating and launching a line, new and exciting things at Shiseido with Hunter Schafer, a Warhol inspired shoot with Andreja Pejić and so much more. Guest Bio: A 20+ year beauty industry veteran, James has worked at the counter, as a trainer, a lead artist, a global artistic director, and lead the strategic transformation of Shiseido Makeup. In his role as Global Artistic Director for Shiseido Makeup, he has broadened his experience as an Artist and Trainer and become an integral part of the executive team. His role centers around facilitating change across all global markets and leading the creative point of view for marketing and product development efforts.
- James is friends with Justin Teodoro (our guest from Ep. 9!) and he came along to the premiere of Larger Than Life: The Kevyn Aucoin Story and that’s how he and Tiffany met.
- James shares his origin story. He grew up in St. Louis and then headed to Chicago. He began to dabble in different art forms but his love for beauty, makeup, and glamour kept him inspired.
- James started working in retail for NARS at Barney’s Chicago in 1996 which lead to his long tenure (20 years!) with NARS. Shiseido Corporation (where he is now) ended up acquiring the NARS brand in the early 2000s.
- When James came to NYC, he started working with the NARS makeup director at the time, Ayako. He was living the NYC life and traveling the world as a makeup artist and launching the NARS brand.

- “I think I'm incredibly humbled to be some gay freak from the suburbs of Missouri that was given the opportunity to reimagine one of the oldest makeup brands in the world. It's totally crazy and totally amazing. And what an opportunity, and I still have those pinch-me moments. I still get excited when someone sends me a DM on Instagram that's like, "I just wanted to let you know that I love the foundation.”
